Risk Assessments

Risk assessment is a process in which hazard are evaluated. These evaluations determine whether an exposed population is at greater-than-expected risk of injury, and/or ill-health, or whether there will be equipment and machinery damage that leads to lost production etc. Risk assessment is the start of the risk management process. It enables employers to understand the action necessary to improve workplace health and safety, as well as to enhance productivity.

Methodology

The process is undertaken using Quantitative risk assessment approach to evaluate the risks with risk being rated as High, Medium or low based on their value. The recommendations are then advanced. The action priority is dependent on the risk rating with High risk requiring immediate action up to 2 weeks; medium risk up to 1 month and high risk up to three months.

The recommendation on the hazard control measures is based on the recommended hazard hierarchy of control: Eliminate the hazard; Substitute the hazard with less hazardous or non hazardous options; Minimize the risk due to the hazard; Reduce the exposure; Isolate the hazard; Provide personal protective equipment and clothing; Implement administrative controls; Have an emergency plan in place; Adopt measures to reduce damage following an accident or emergency.
