Environmental Auditing

An Environmental Audit (EA) is the systematic documentation, periodic and objective evaluation of activities and processes of an operating business, to establish if the business complies with environmental requirements and is enforcing legislation. The goal of an EA is to determine the extent to which the activities and programs of an operating business conform to an environmental management plan in a bid to ensure a safe and healthy environment. An environmental audit is therefore a tool to test the effectiveness of environmental efforts.

An environmental audit is conducted to comply with Section 68 of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), 1999 and will be carried out in accordance with the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, hereafter referred to as The Regulations.

Methodology

The environmental audit is carried out through questionnaires, an environmental site visit, test analysis and public consultation and in manner specified by the regulations; sec 35 of the regulations.
